Environment
The Municipality of The Atazar It is located about 76 km from Madrid (tourism zone of the Sierra Norte Y Lower Lozoya Valley from Madrid), in the north of the region, near the province of Guadalajara, at about 995 meters above sea level and has an area of 29.50 km2. Located in the region of the lower valley of Lozoya, it has an unbeatable location. It is located halfway up the slope, with views of the El Atazar reservoir and surrounded by mountains. Its environment is nature in its purest form. The dam engineering that has taken the name of this municipality and the environment in which it is located are its two main attractions.
It covers a territory located on the northeast edge of the Community of Madrid. Its limits are: the province of Guadalajara to the East; the municipality of Puebla de la Sierra to the North; Cervera de Buitrago and Robledillo de la Jara to the West and Patones to the South. Its surface is 29.5 square km.
Its territory presents a very rugged relief, with altitudes that reach 1,389 meters from the Pinilla mountains and 1,439 meters from Somosierra on the northern and eastern limits of the term, and 1,399 meters from Cerro Cabeza Antón, in the center of it, descending to less than 700 meters in the Lozoya basin.
The Lozoya River, dammed by the El Atazar Dam, serves as a natural boundary with the municipality of Patones. The Arroyo de La Pasá flows into it, as well as El Riato, which flows through the lands of El Atazar, although the dividing line with Robledillo is located in its valley, and into which the northernmost streams of the term pour their waters: Arroyos de El Perro, del Águila and Los Arredondos.
The few buildings dedicated to mixed residential-agricultural use, which still remain standing, although in poor condition, form irregular blocks around which stables and corrals are attached, creating a ring of stone fences. Throughout the term there are also remains of them and scattered tinados. The sheds are made of slate and half of them are covered with Arabic tiles, straw and dry rockroses on unroughened wooden beams. The interior is accessed through a door with jambs and a wooden lintel, leaving the outer part as a corral. These corrals and sheds were used to keep the herds overnight in the summer months when they grazed far from the nucleus.
If you look closely at the landscape, the old terraces that bear witness to the ancient cultivation of cereals (wheat, rye and barley), which together with livestock, were the livelihood of the town, are also maintained.
Nor can we forget the Old Fountain located under the bridge 1 km before reaching the town and which dates from the 15th century, although it is attributed to its Arab origin.
In the basins of the Puebla and Riato rivers there is riparian forest. In the meadow there are oak, gall oak, ash trees, etc. and ash trees in the La Pasá stream. The rest of the territory is occupied by scrub, mainly rockrose, rosemary, thyme and steppe. There are also numerous holm oaks scattered throughout the municipality.
The origin of the name is not known with certainty. Formerly it was "Latazar", as mentioned in the Book of the Hunting of Alfonso XI. Some authors attribute a Celtic-Germanic and even Basque root to it, although most prefer to see an Arab origin.

- The festivities of Santa Catalina, local patron saint, on November 25. These festivities were linked to the slaughter, a rite that has been recovered in recent years.
- The Heifer Festival, in February, coinciding with the Carnival. At Carnival, a wooden heifer scares the disguised neighbors.
- More recently, the fiestas on the first weekend of August, with music, games and animation by the clubs, attract a large number of residents and visitors.
